Melanoma
Melanoma is the most common cancer in women in their mid-twenties and the second most common cancer in women in
their early thirties. It is also the fastest spreading, most deadly form of cancer. The fact that only
19% of Americans limit their sun exposure helps to increase the cases of Melanoma each year.
In Caucasians, Melanoma cases have tripled in the past 20 years.
Signs and Symptoms
- asymetrical moles
- moles with irregular borders
- moles that are more than one color
- can occur on any part of the body
Who is at Risk??
- those who have fair skin, blond hair, and blue eyes are at highest risk.
- people who have had three blistering sunburns in their life.
- the American Cancer Society recommends that women over age 20 be examined by a dermatologists
at least every three years.
Prevention
- Apply SPF 20 or higher sunscreen when outdoors.
- Wear protectice hats, clothing, and sunglasses.
- Avoid the sun during the hours of 11am to 3pm.
- Do not go to suntanning beds.
- Examine entire skin once a month.
Treatment
- A bioposy will first be performed to determine maignancy.
- If it is Melanoma, the lesion will be removed.
- Removal of lymph nodes may be necessary
- Chemotherapy and immunotherapy may be needed.
